Vice recently did an amazing piece regarding one of the most interesting abandoned places I’ve ever heard of, ‘Battleship Island’ off the coast of Japan. According to the article, this island was once mined for coal and in it’s heyday so densely populated that there were 13,000 people per square kilometer. Once the coal industry fell into decline with the rise of oil, this site was quickly abandoned, and has been left to rot since.
